School Readiness Program

स्कूल चलें हम

Children on the spectrum can face a unique set of challenges at school. For parents, it’s helpful to be aware of what some of these challenges might be, and how to prepare for them.

Children learn their ABCs through their academic curriculum, but the hidden curriculum teaches them things like social awareness, self-help skills, and what behaviour is expected of them in a classroom setting. Some of those behaviours include:

  • Staying seated
  • Making eye contact with teachers and peers
  • Communicating their needs
  • General social skills

Autism and School Anxiety

Children on the spectrum tend to experience anxiety more likely than their neurotypical peers. This is especially because they find themselves in completely new routine and unfamiliar settings for which they are not prepared of. Some easy tips to reduce instances of anxiety for parents to consider when preparing their child for school include:

  • Understand what causes the anxiety: Try to find out the reason for your child’s anxiety, if you know that factor, you can better equip them to face it as it comes on.

  • Practice at home: Setting up a dummy school at home and give them exposure about the school environment. Also, parents can show them photographs and videos of their school premises to make them understand which can help them feel more prepared when the time comes to face that anxiety in the classroom.

  • Use scheduling: Try making visual schedules so that they know what to expect, and get better at handling transitions from one activity to the next. This can go a long way in adapting to the school atmosphere.
